Honestly? Yes.

Please donโ€™t shoot the messenger ๐Ÿ™ƒ

Iโ€™m often hesitant to post things like this because it sparks debate about what should be right versus what actually happens.

But if youโ€™re thinking of quitting your job, you should understand how around 95% of employers will react.

If youโ€™re part of the 5% whoโ€™ve experienced something different โ€” great.

For everyone else, listen up ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿ’ฐ Guaranteed bonuses & sign-ons

Unless you have another offer to leverage, an employer is far less likely to offer a guaranteed bonus or sign-on.

USA โ€“ It is more common to still receive one.
UK โ€“ It is almost a certainty that you wonโ€™t.

From a hiring managerโ€™s perspective, youโ€™re not leaving anything on the table.

โŒ No forfeited bonus
โŒ No deferred compensation
โŒ No competing offer to offset

So the internal thinking becomes:

Why should we offer a guarantee if thereโ€™s nothing weโ€™re asking them to give up?

This isnโ€™t about fairness.
Itโ€™s about leverage โš–๏ธ

๐Ÿง Questions will also be asked

Why did you quit before securing another role?
Were you forced out?
Do you have poor judgement?
Are you disengaged or unmotivated?

Those 5, 10, 15 or even 20+ years of continuous work history unfortunately donโ€™t carry as much weight as many people expect ๐Ÿ“‰

๐Ÿ“Œ The reality

You tend to receive better offers when you are employed.
You tend to receive more guarantees.

Rightly or wrongly, you are often viewed as a more attractive option than someone who has been searching for a long time.

Unless there is a very significant redundancy package, hold on to your role for as long as you reasonably can.

Even if that means relocating temporarily or commuting for a period ๐Ÿš†

Ask yourself this:

If you were out of work for a year, would you swap that situation for the role youโ€™re in today?

Long notice periods or non-competes โ€” Iโ€™ll cover this another time.

And if youโ€™ve been made redundant, donโ€™t let this worry you.

That scenario comes with its own advantages when job searching, see below:

Losing your job isnโ€™t always a disadvantage.

Why redundancy can work in your favour

If you have a long notice period, employers often feel more comfortable engaging.
Youโ€™re already cutting into that notice, and theyโ€™re not worried about waiting months only for you to pull out.

Hiring you is often simpler.

No counter-offers from your current employer โ€” only competition from other firms.

If youโ€™re in advanced interview processes, especially for similar roles, say so.
It gives you the desirability of an employed candidate, with the flexibility of someone who isnโ€™t working.

๐Ÿš€ Immediate availability matters

Even without a notice period, the ability to start almost immediately is a huge advantage.
Youโ€™re simply an easier hire.

Just be careful how you position it โ€” you want to be seen as an unexpectedly good hire, not the cheap option.

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Use your time properly

Your schedule is more flexible.
Push for face-to-face interviews where possible โ€” it makes a real difference.

You also have more time to prepare.
Use it.
Do two or three times the prep you would normally do while working full-time ๐Ÿ“š

Treat your job search like a full-time job, not a side project.

โœˆ๏ธ On travel and time off

If youโ€™re going to travel, actually travel.
Two weeks in Spain is a holiday โ€” not โ€œtaking time outโ€.

Show that youโ€™ve used the time to upskill.
Learn a language.
Take a technical or programming course.
Demonstrate momentum.

โš ๏ธ The risk to manage

Some employers may question whether you want this role โ€” or whether youโ€™re applying because you donโ€™t have other options.

That means you need to be more convincing, not less.
Clear motivation.
Clear narrative.
Clear reasons.

Handled properly, redundancy doesnโ€™t put you on the back foot โ€” it can actually work in your favour.
